2/22/2014: The HOPE Program

This is the first of what we plan to be a series of shows on the health challenges faced by competitive athletes. The focus of today’s show was on heart health and obesity. Our guest was Dr. Henry Buchwald, Professor of Surgery at the U of MN and one of the founders of the HOPE Program.

Living Heart Foundation - HOPE Program

The HOPE Program is an outreach of the Living Heart Foundation and works with former NFL players on “Heart, Obesity, Prevention and Education”. Over 70% of former NFL player over the age of 50 who are clinically overweight or obese have suffered a heart attack. The HOPE Program is doing screening and educating to help those players who sometimes don’t even realize the rick they are under.

The HOPE program will continue to help those who are search of some form of treatment, but one of their long term goals is to educate younger players, so they can seek the help they need to remain healthy even after they are not longer competitively playing, and also for those who have had success to turn around and help inspire and educate the public at large.
